PKRU’s Antique House Conservation Idea Awarded by The Association of Siamese Architects

When talking about an architect, most of people may think about a person works on designing high and modern building; but at Phuket Rajabhat University, our architect lecturers work to conserve and renovate local antique buildings. With their architectural knowledge, professional skill, and the awareness in value of Andaman traditional buildings, it can be said that our lecturers are the old building undemolisher.

Why is the antique building important and should be preserved rather than demolished and rebuilt in a modern design, abandoned, or sold?

The answer according to the Association of Siamese Architects is the antique building can potentially be the architecture and community conservation. In the other words, the conservation of those building on the basis of understanding their values can contribute to changes, collaboration, conservation, or even economic and tourism growth in the society.

For this reason, the Architecture Program, Faculty of Science and Technology at Phuket Rajabhat University by Asst. Prof. Siwapong Thongjua; and the research team from Chiang Mai University led by Dr. Apaporn Wonglaksanapan, had worked together on the project presenting antique house conservation scheme featuring the 3D pictures and models, and exhibition of Phuket Antique House which was awarded for the excellent conservation concept.

The antique house conservation under this project, ‘Baan Yin Teng’, the antique house located in Kathu district, Phuket, was one of the ten conservation projects throughout the country awarded by the Association of Siamese Architects for Architectural and Community Heritage Conservation; whereas another house in the project ‘Baan Toh Bu’ located in Thalang district, Phuket, was one of the final sixteen conservation projects around the country.

Baan Yin Teg, Kathu, Phuket

Baan Yin Teng is the Ang Mo Lao, the Chinese – European style owned by the Hokkien Chinese, located in Kathu district. The house represents the history of economic and society development in the area. The conservation of this house shows the intention of the house owner in keeping is as the local museum exhibiting original ways of life of people in the community.

The conservation process of Baan Toh Bu features the coding of parts of the house, survey, and model making. The house’s remaining wood and the old wood were used to renovate the house in the coconut plantation, the area nearby the original location of the house. During the basement preparation, there were parts of ancient terracotta containers, beads, and coins founded in the area. When the construction finished, the house owner family and their relatives organized the event called Nuree to mark their intention in this antique house conservation. Besides, the house owner and the community leader also discussed about the community antique house visiting route. Now the area around the house is the herb garden and the showcase of the original household appliances. Not only being the community local life learning venue, the renovated Baan Toh Bu also connects people in the community.

This antique house conservation project is one of the PKRU’s academic services for local community development. When it comes to serving the community, we do not only speak; our lecturers and students always dedicate to every community serving projects; the antique house conservation project is just one many projects we have been working for Phuket community and we are going to tell you more about them next time.
