PKRU students design ‘Tai Pla Curry briquette machine’ to help entrepreneurs in Kalai Village

Students from Phuket Rajabhat University's Industrial Technology Program, Tanawat Petchawang (Nong Kot), and Warawoot Chootnok (Nong Ball), under the supervision of Dr. Somsak Limwongsakorn and Aharn Kittisak Jit kue, designed and developed a Tai Pla curry (southern fermented fish stomach curry) briquette and packaging machine to assist local entrepreneurs in Kalai Village.
The machine was a part of the Machine, Tools, and Equipment Model Development for Local Product Improvement in Kalai Agricultural Products Transformation Cluster, in Kalai Sub – district, Takua Toong District, Phang Nga, funded by Science, Research, and Innovation Promotion and Utilization Division, Ministry of Science Research and Innovation, and Thai – German Institute.
The Tai Pla briquette and packaging machine was designed in response to the demand of a local Dried Tai Pla Curry producer, Je Daeng Shop Baan Kalai, to produce the curry with a three-month shelf life without the use of preservatives. The manufacturer wanted their items to be easy to sell online and wanted to improve product design and packaging, and PKRU certainly helps them by designing the briquette and packing machine that requires minimum maintenance and production labor.
The two students designed the machine with the help of the teachers, using GMP and Reverse Engineering. This project allows the students to apply what they learned in the Industrial Technology Program, such as industrial materials, fundamental industrial operations, industrial electrical systems, industrial design and planning, and industrial projects, to the development of an actual machine.
Tanawat Petsawang told us that he applied 'Social Engineering' skills while working on this project such as critical thinking, problem solving, knowledge communication, teamwork, and innovation creation to address societal issues while working on this project.
Warawoot Chootnok stated that he had visited Kalai Village and Je Deang Shop to observe the manufacturing of Dried Tai Pla Curry and identify the problem utilizing information from the subject of production management for industrial business. Following that, he researched more resources and collaborated with the instructors in building the machine.
Not just Kalai entrepreneurs, but anybody can benefit from PKRU's academic services; if you need assistance, please contact us at Industrial Innovation Program, Faculty of Science and Technology, Phuket Rajabhat University, or dial 09 4149 2487.
