Asst. Prof. Dr. Hiran Prasankarn, the President of Phuket Rajabhat University, said “English is the international and main language that humans use to communicate with people who speak different languages and come from different cultures, so everyone has to use English as a main connecting language. The Ministry of Education has designated English, as the second language after the national Thai language, as the core of curriculums in every level from the kindergarten to lifelong education. English plays a role in Thai and people’s lives around the world. Nowadays, human beings communicate in English, whether it be direct communicating, watching television, watching movies, programming or in academic handbooks. Learning English, as an ability to communicate, is the tool for seeking knowledge and career building. As a matter of fact, Thailand has emphasized English for a long time, but Thai people are not as good as expected. It may be because the curriculum does not emphasize speaking, but rather grammar, translation, reading comprehension and university entrance tests. What we should adjust in learning English is communication in which our students are not usually assertive in speaking when foreigners ask for help. They cannot explain things well in English. Also, the factors from wrong instruction, emphasizing grammar, leads students to not being able to apply that and communicate well. That causes students not to feel the fun of studying, discourages them and they lack impulse. The more time passes, the more they feel bored and tired because they get pressured and have unpleasant feelings.
As I mentioned, English is the door to future careers. The capability of communicating in English makes your life more valuable, cheerful and lively experiencing other cultures. The communication will happen after we comprehend during listening; thus, we can respond or speak. Being able to speak is beneficial for responding and exchanging information including storytelling, lecturing, and commenting which needs to be evaluated from what we have heard and analyzed; so it needs excellent language learning. Therefore, the Office of Academic Resources and Information Technology will support the activity developing the four English skills as well as further provide a good service of English media, for independent learning via online, to the students.”
